Thai heatwave on the horizon: It’s a storm in a hot cup

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for Thailand, predicting hot to very hot weather and cautioning against potential dangers from summer storms, including thunderstorms and strong winds. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities and take precautions from today, March 28.

A moderate high-pressure system from China is currently affecting southern China and is expected to extend over northern Vietnam and Laos on March 28. This system will further spread to northeast Thailand and the South China Sea by March 29.

This will result in eastern and southeastern winds bringing moisture to northern Thailand, where the weather remains hot to very hot. Between March 29 and April 1, summer storms are anticipated in the northern regions of Thailand.

These storms may feature thunderstorms, strong winds, hail in some places, and potentially lightning. People in northern Thailand should be cautious of these summer storms, avoiding travel through stormy areas or staying in open spaces, under large trees, or near unstable structures and billboards.

Farmers are advised to reinforce fruit trees and protect crops and livestock from potential damage while also taking care of their health during this period of changing weather.

On March 28, northern Thailand continues to experience general heat with haze and some areas facing extreme heat. Thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in certain parts of the northeast.

Weather forecast

Residents are urged to maintain their health due to the very hot weather and avoid prolonged outdoor activities. Caution against thunderstorms and strong winds is advised in specific areas.

Low atmospheric pressure due to heat covers northern Thailand, while south and southeast winds affect the eastern part of the northeast. Weak southeastern winds are covering the lower Gulf of Thailand and the south, causing scattered thunderstorms, especially in the lower south. Waves in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are about one metre high, increasing in stormy areas.

Between March 31 and April 2, a low-pressure cell will move across the lower South China Sea, lower Gulf of Thailand, and southern Thailand into the Andaman Sea, bringing increased rain and strong winds to the south, with heavy rainfall in some areas.

The air quality in northern Thailand is affected by dust and haze accumulation, ranging from moderate to high levels, due to weak winds in the area.
