Cold blast chills Thailand as southern storms roll in
Thailand is gripped by chilly winds in the north as fierce storms lash the south, triggering weather alerts across the country.
According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), a strong high-pressure system is sweeping the upper south, bringing chilly mornings and strong winds across northern, northeastern, central and eastern Thailand. Residents are urged to stay warm, with dry, windy conditions increasing fire risks. Farmers should protect crops from possible damage.
Meanwhile, a strong northeast monsoon over the Gulf and upper Andaman Sea, combined with low pressure over the lower South, is triggering widespread storms and heavy rainfall. Waves in the Gulf are reaching 2 to 3 metres, and over 3 metres during thunderstorms. Small boats are advised to stay ashore, with all vessels urged to exercise caution.
The forecast from 6am today, November 21 to 6am tomorrow, November 22, is as follows:
Across northern Thailand, minimum temperatures will range from 15 to 19°C, climbing to 25 to 31°C during the day. Mountainous areas will be even colder, with early morning lows of 3 to 11°C. Winds will blow from the northeast at 10 to 20 km/h.

In northeastern provinces, conditions will remain cool to cold with strong winds, as temperatures fall between 13 and 18°C in the morning and peak at 26 to 28°C. Mountain tops will see temperatures drop as low as 6°C, with winds reaching speeds of 15 to 35 km/h.
Central Thailand will experience cool mornings and persistent breezes, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 21°C in the early hours and increasing to 28 or 29°C later in the day. Winds will move at 10 to 30 km/h. In the east, morning temperatures will range from 19 to 22°C, rising to 27 to 30°C by afternoon. Strong northeasterly winds of 20 to 40 km/h will push waves up to 2 metres near the shore and over 2 metres further out to sea.
The eastern coast of southern Thailand, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, is expected to be battered by heavy to very heavy rain. Temperatures will range between 21 and 24°C, increasing only slightly to 27 or 28°C during the day. Winds will reach 20 to 40 km/h, with waves in the Gulf expected at 2 to 3 metres, climbing above 3 metres in thunderstorms.
On the west coast, provinces such as Krabi, Trang and Satun will experience widespread rain with some heavy downpours. Minimum temperatures will hover around 23 to 24°C, with maximums at 27 to 28°C. From Krabi upwards, winds of 20 to 40 km/h will bring seas of 2 metres close to shore and over 3 metres during thunderstorms.
In Trang and areas further south, winds will ease to 20 to 35 km/h, but waves could still exceed 2 metres in stormy conditions.
Bangkok and its surrounding areas will see a cool morning, with temperatures dipping to 21 to 22°C and warming up to 28 to 31°C in the afternoon. Winds will blow from the northeast at 10 to 30 km/h.
