Thailand sees cool mornings and stormy seas in weather shake-up

Shifting winds bring isolated rain, rough waves, and health alerts

Thailand is facing cool mornings up north and stormy seas down south, as shifting winds bring isolated rain and changing conditions across the country.

A weak high-pressure system from China is currently sitting over the upper north and northeast of Thailand, bringing cool mornings to those regions. Meanwhile, the lower northeast, east, central region, and Bangkok are under the influence of weakening southerly and southeasterly winds, resulting in reduced rainfall and occasional isolated thunderstorms.

Residents in these areas are urged to take care of their health as the temperature swings could catch people off guard, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns.

The forecast from 6am today, November 11, to 6am tomorrow, November 12, is as follows:

In the north, expect cool morning conditions with isolated thundershowers in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. Temperatures will range from 21 to 24°C during the day and 30 to 34°C in the afternoon. Mountain tops will be cooler, with lows of 10 to 17°C. Winds will be variable at 10 to 15 km/hr.

The northeast will also experience cool mornings and isolated showers, particularly in Loei, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, and Surin. Minimum temperatures will be 21 to 24°C, with highs from 32 to 34°C. Mountain areas will see temperatures fall to between 14 and 17°C. Easterly winds will blow at 10 to 20 km/hr.

For East Thailand, isolated thundershowers are forecast in Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C in the morning to 32 to 35°C later in the day. Southeasterly winds will range from 15 to 30 km/hr. Waves are expected to be around 1 metre, increasing to over 2 metres in stormy areas.

The east coast in the southern, including Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, will experience scattered thundershowers. Morning temperatures will be between 22 and 24°C, with highs of 32 to 34°C. Westerly winds will reach speeds of 15 to 30 km/hr, and waves could exceed 2 metres during thunderstorms.

On the west coast, particularly around Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun, expect scattered thundershowers. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C at the low end to 30 to 32°C at the high end. Northwesterly winds will blow at 15 to 35 km/hr, with waves between 1 to 2 metres, rising above 2 metres in thunderstorms.
