Stormy southern seas and chilly dawns grip Thailand

Public urged to stay alert as changing winds affect daily life

Thailand braces for shifting skies as a weak high-pressure system from China continues to influence the country’s upper regions, bringing cooler mornings to the north and northeast. Meanwhile, scattered thundershowers remain a possibility across much of the country due to changing wind patterns.

The forecast from 6pm yesterday, November 11, to 6pm today, November 12, is as follows:

In the north, residents can expect cool conditions in the morning with isolated thunderstorms likely, particularly in provinces such as Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. Temperatures will range from a minimum of 21 to 24°C to a maximum of 30 to 34°C. Mountainous areas may see a significant drop, with minimum temperatures as low as 10°C. Winds will remain light and variable at 10 to 15 km/h.

The northeastern region will also experience cool mornings and isolated showers, mainly in Loei, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 21 to 24°C in the lowlands and dip to 14 to 17°C in the highlands. Winds will come from the east at speeds between 10 and 20 km/h.

Central Thailand, including provinces such as Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi, will see isolated thundershowers with minimum temperatures between 22 and 25°C and highs of 32 to 35°C. Winds will blow from the south at 10 to 15 km/h.

Eastern provinces such as Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat are also forecast to receive isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures here will range from 24 to 26°C at the lowest to 32 to 35°C during the day. Southeasterly winds will pick up at 15 to 30 km/h, creating waves of around 1 metre and exceeding 2 metres in stormy conditions.

Temperatures will hover between 22 and 25°C and peak at 32 to 35°C. Westerly winds will reach speeds of 15 to 30 km/h, and sea waves will reach up to 1 metre, with over 2 metres during thundershowers.

On the west coast, scattered thundershowers will affect areas like Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. Morning lows will range from 23 to 26°C, with daytime highs between 31 and 33°C. Northwesterly winds will range from 15 to 35 km/h, and waves are forecast at 1 to 2 metres, climbing above 2 metres during storms, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

Bangkok and surrounding areas can expect isolated thundershowers, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 26°C in the morning to a maximum of 32 to 34°C. Southerly winds will blow at 10 to 15 km/h.

In the broader picture, Tropical Storm Fung-wong is currently moving northward over the upper South China Sea towards Taiwan and is expected to have no impact on Thailand’s weather. Nonetheless, travellers are advised to check weather conditions before setting out. All marine vessels should proceed with caution and avoid stormy areas.
