Pickup truck runs red light, kills motorcyclist in Buriram
A pickup truck ran a red light and struck a motorcyclist, resulting in the rider’s immediate death. Despite efforts by a nurse and a postman to revive him, the man succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Around 3.30pm yesterday, August 21, Police Lieutenant Prachat Raksawang, Deputy Inspector of Mueang Buriram Police Station, was alerted to an accident involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle on Buriram’s bypass road. The incident occurred at the red light intersection near Saithan Resort in Chum Het sub-district, Buriram. Emergency services, including an ambulance and the Sawang Jannyatham Buriram rescue unit, were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the scene was chaotic. A nursing student and a postman were performing CPR on the injured motorcyclist, identified as 53 year old Sakchai Kijrum, a resident of Buriram. Sakchai had been thrown from his motorcycle by the impact of the collision with a four-door pickup truck.
He sustained severe head injuries and a deformed right leg. Despite the prompt medical attention, Sakchai showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. His motorcycle, with the registration number 1 กล 6298 Buriram, was found severely damaged in a ditch beside the road.
Approximately 50 metres away, the white Toyota Hilux pickup truck, registration กต 4979 Buriram, was found with significant damage to its front left side and a shattered windshield. The driver, Komon Thirasin, from Buriram, sustained chest injuries from the impact and was unable to provide a statement at the scene. He was given first aid by the medical team before being transported to Buriram Central Hospital.
Nutthamon Phengphit, a 22 year old fourth year nursing student at Western University Buriram, witnessed the accident. She recounted that she was returning home from university and waiting at the red light along with the postman and the pickup truck. According to Nutthamon, the motorcyclist had the green light and was crossing the intersection when the pickup truck, ignoring the red light, sped past the waiting vehicles and collided with the motorcycle.
Fatal accident
“The motorcyclist was hit with a loud crash, and his body was thrown into the air before landing hard on the road.”
Nutthamon added that, at the time, the rescue unit had not yet arrived, so she and the postman, who is also a volunteer rescuer, attempted to perform CPR on Sakchai. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, and he did not survive, reported KhaoSod.
“We tried our best to save him, but there was no response.”
The police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident and will examine whether any additional factors contributed to the tragic event.
