Man shot by police after machete attack in Nakhon Si Thammarat

A 57 year old man wielding a machete was fatally shot after attacking police and residents in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Thung Song district. The incident occurred yesterday, February 19, when police attempted to subdue him following reports of his violent behaviour.
At the scene in Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat, officers discovered the body of the victim, Adisak, with a bullet wound to the chest. Nearby lay a blood-stained machete and two kitchen knives tucked into his waistband. Additionally, a police restraining device was found on the ground.
Village headman, 49 year old Piya Kaewkhumpai, sustained a severe injury to his left wrist after being slashed by Adisak. He was promptly taken to Thung Song Hospital for emergency surgery to reconnect nerves, bones, and tendons.
Investigations revealed that Adisak was a known drug addict under surveillance. Before the shooting, Police Lieutenant Pitakson Aranyapruek, along with Piya, attempted to negotiate with Adisak as he threatened relatives and locals with his machete.

Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, the man resisted and attacked Piya, resulting in his severe injury, before turning on Lt. Pitakson. In self-defence, the officer discharged his firearm, hitting Adisak in the chest and resulting in his death.
Police Colonel Kriengsak Noonklieng, who was among the investigators at the scene.
“The actions taken were in self-defence during the line of duty to neutralise an imminent threat. The incident will be thoroughly investigated and documented in accordance with legal procedures.”
He added that a similar incident in Ron Phibun district saw a police officer fatally stabbed, underscoring the dangerous nature of such situations, reported KhaoSod.
The police confirmed that a thorough legal inquiry will be conducted to ensure all procedures are followed correctly in this case.
In similar news, a man attacked his wife and her relatives with a knife at a home in Hua Tum village, Kalasin province, leaving four people injured. The suspect fled the scene on a stolen motorcycle, prompting a police manhunt.
