Father in Nakhon Phanom assaults toddler son amid drug influence

A father under the influence of methamphetamine in Nakhon Phanom allegedly attacked his young child, dunking the toddler’s head underwater.
Concerned residents reported the incident, prompting district officials to intervene. The father later confessed, claiming anger over the child’s actions.
Yesterday, March 30, Somsak Boonchan, the district chief of Mueang Nakhon Phanom, was alerted by residents of Chum Chon Noi Tai in Nakhon Phanom municipality about the violent incident. Accompanied by a video clip as evidence, residents requested urgent intervention.
In response, a special operations team led by Chakrapol Thiangphak, the district’s security officer, was dispatched to investigate the scene near Wat Noi Phothikham in Mueang district.
The investigation led police to a makeshift wooden house, home to 56 year old To Yalai. Upon questioning, To admitted to assaulting his one year old biological child by holding the child’s head underwater.
No illegal items were found during the search, and To was taken with his child to the district office for further questioning. A urine test revealed traces of drugs in To’s system.
To, who appeared disoriented and under the influence, explained that his wife had left him, leaving him to care for their child alone. He makes a living by collecting and selling scrap using a modified tricycle, which also serves as a makeshift crib for the child.
To claimed that the incident occurred out of frustration when his child defecated in a basin, leading him to violently discipline the child, as shown in the video. The child sustained an injury near the right eye. To acknowledged sporadic drug use, stating he acquires methamphetamine from sellers.
Following initial inquiries, district officials arranged for the child to be examined for injuries at Nakhon Phanom Hospital.
They also coordinated with the provincial social development and human security office and the children’s home to ensure the child’s care. As of now, no charges have been filed against To, pending the results of a medical examination, reported KhaoSod.
