Two American nationals were found dead inside a hotel room in the Jomtien area of Pattaya yesterday, March 31, after hotel staff said the pair had not been seen leaving the room for four to five days.

Police were notified of the case, and an investigation team went to the hotel with rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation.

Inside the room, officers found the bodies of a man and a woman lying on the floor with their arms around each other. Police said the deaths were estimated to have occurred at least three to four days earlier.

The man was later identified as 85 year old Richard Carl Speth Jr., and the woman as 65 year old Kelly Marie Bennett. Both were reported to be United States citizens, according to Amarin TV.

Investigators said several medical items were found in the room, along with a letter written in English, which officers believed could be a farewell letter.

Initial enquiries found the couple had been staying at the hotel for around one month and were reported to have health problems. Police said no one had seen them leave the room for four to five days.

The case came to light after hotel staff noticed an unusual smell while walking past and tried calling out, but received no response. Staff then decided to open the room and found the two bodies.

Police found medication scattered near the bodies, leading investigators to believe the couple may have taken it to end their lives, though the cause of death has not been confirmed.
