Thailand hosts 6th BIMSTEC Summit, fostering regional ties

Thailand is set to host the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit from April 3 to 4, according to reports from the Thai government.

Government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub announced yesterday, March 30, that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is preparing to welcome leaders and representatives from six member countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Despite the recent earthquake tragedy in Myanmar, its PM will attend the summit, as confirmed by the Myanmar government spokesperson, Jirayu stated.

The Burmese PM expressed confidence in both Thailand’s and Bangkok’s readiness to host the event, encouraging the people of Thailand to warmly welcome summit participants.

BIMSTEC, established on June 6, 1997, with Thailand as a founding member, acts as a bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia, focusing on economic and academic collaboration within the Bay of Bengal region.

This 6th BIMSTEC Summit, hosted by Thailand, marks the first significant international conference under the current government and presents an opportunity for Thailand to showcase its leadership and foster regional cooperation among BIMSTEC member countries, according to observers.

The 38 year old PM will open the summit, leading discussions on key topics including trade and investment, infrastructure connectivity, and food security cooperation.

Speaking on the upcoming summit, Jirayu considers the event as a great opportunity to foster regional ties and cooperation.

“This summit, hosted by Thailand, presents an opportunity for the nation to promote regional cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. I invite all sectors to participate in welcoming and hosting the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.”

In related news, Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa previously defended the nation’s decision to join BRICS, stating it aligns with national interests and will benefit the economy and international cooperation.
