Thai-speed ahead: PM revs up talks for F1 grand prix in Thailand

Could Thailand be the next country to host a glamorous Formula One (F1) Grand Prix? Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has opened the door to this exciting possibility, holding high-level talks with Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of the Formula One Group, about bringing the iconic motorsport event to the kingdom.

Yesterday, March 18, Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsab confirmed that the meeting highlighted Thailand’s potential to host international events that would benefit both the economy and tourism.

Jirayu stated that the government, alongside relevant agencies, is committed to collaborating with the Formula One Group to bring this vision to life.

This move aligns with former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s broader vision of transforming Thailand into a global hub for prestigious events. Domenicali also expressed confidence that an F1 race in Thailand would not only boost the economy but also enhance the Kingdom of Thailand’s tourism industry, tapping into the country’s massive motorsports fan base.

With Thailand’s rich motorsport history and the appeal of its famous racers, the Formula One Group sees vast potential for leveraging the country’s strengths.

“Thailand has the infrastructure to support such an event, and with the right investment, this could be a game-changer.”

Both sides have agreed to continue exploring the possibility, with the Thai PM urging all relevant agencies to conduct a thorough study. This will assess potential city locations for the race, the required investments, and the overall feasibility of hosting an F1 event. The Thai government is determined to use the opportunity not only to promote tourism but also to showcase the country’s rich local culture to a global audience, reported The Nation.

If these talks progress, Thailand could soon join the ranks of countries hosting one of the most prestigious events in the motorsports calendar. The race for Thailand’s F1 future is on, and it’s speeding ahead.
