Thai Armed Forces Day cannon explosion injures two soldiers (video)

A video capturing the moment a cannon exploded, and severely injuring two soldiers during a Thai Armed Forces Day salute, has been released. The explosion occurred on Saturday, January 18 at Surasi Camp, where the 9th Infantry Division was firing a ceremonial 21-gun salute using 105mm artillery.

As the 17th round was fired, the cannon’s breech exploded, causing significant injuries to two soldiers. One soldier lost an arm, while another was rendered unconscious. Both were swiftly transported to Chao Khun Phai Boon Hospital in Kanchanaburi province for urgent medical treatment.

Deputy army spokesperson Colonel Ritcha Suksuwan commented on the situation.

“Army Commander-in-Chief Pana Klaew Plod Thook extended his condolences and ordered an immediate suspension of the ammunition batch involved in the incident. An investigation into the cause of the explosion was also ordered, alongside directives for the commanding officers to ensure the injured soldiers receive the best possible care.”

The injured soldiers have been identified as Sergeant Chaisilp Rakchat and Sergeant Witchaphon Prangthong. The former suffered severe injuries leading to the amputation of his lower right arm and damage to his cornea. He is currently undergoing treatment at Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok. The latter sustained minor injuries and has been permitted by doctors to recover at home under observation.

A video of the incident was circulated on the Facebook page ข่าวเฟสบุ๊ค, showing the moment the 105mm artillery at Surasi Camp fired the ceremonial salutes. The footage captures the chaos that ensued following the explosion, with emergency services rushing to provide aid and transport the injured soldiers to hospital, reported KhaoSod.

In related news, a bomb explosion occurred in a side alley near TK Park, central Pattani, injuring six volunteer officers. The incident happened at 8am on January 13, just 20 metres from the Mueang Pattani Police Station. The assailants had hidden the explosive device in a vehicle parked in front of a row of shophouses, causing damage to nearby buildings.
