Foreign motorcycle rider crashes on dangerous curve in Phuket
A foreign motorcycle rider lost control of the vehicle last night at a curve along Kalim Beach in Phuket, cutting off a Thai man’s car before crashing into a barrier and parked motorcycles.
A Thai motorist shared a dash cam video of the accident yesterday, January 20, on Facebook account Mai All Star, with a caption that read…
“A foreigner lost control at the curve. If I hadn’t braked in time, I would have crashed into them. The foreigners hit a barrier, causing a loud noise. They just got up and rode away from the scene.”
In the video, the Thai driver is seen travelling at a moderate speed along Barame Road when his dash cam captures a foreign motorcycle rider, with a passenger, speeding towards the curve.
The foreign rider suddenly cut the Thai driver’s car off in the front, disappeared from view, followed by the sound of a crash. The Thai driver then pulled over to the roadside and got out to check on his vehicle. He is seen walking towards the two foreigners to check on them as well.
The two foreigners appeared to suffer only mild injuries, as they managed to get up and continue their journey after the incident.
Quickly flee scene
The two foreign nationals were criticised by Thai netizens, who agreed that they had been riding too fast when approaching the curve. Some suspected the foreigners left the scene quickly because they were worried about having to pay compensation to other motorists.
There is no report on whether the owner of the damaged motorcycles took any legal action against the foreign motorist.
The curve on Barame Road is known locally as the Kalim Curve. It is one of the most dangerous curves in Phuket, where both Thai and foreign motorists previously lost control of their vehicles, often ending up on Kalim Beach.
In a related accident reported last October, three vehicles collided with traffic barriers and fell onto Kalim Beach, which is filled with rocks. MGR Online reported that most of the victims in accidents at the site were foreigners unfamiliar with the route.
Despite its reputation as a dangerous curve, the spot is a popular attraction for those wishing to view the sunset. The beach is about 900 metres from the renowned Patong Beach.
