Thai student hospitalised after 800 squat punishment at school

A student in Thailand was hospitalised earlier this week after a teacher allegedly ordered him to perform 800 squats as punishment for failing to hand in his homework.

The incident was brought to light today, February 4, by the Facebook page เจ๊ม้อย v+, where the boy’s father shared his son’s experience.

According to the father, the student began to suffer intense pain after returning home from school one day. Alarmed by his condition, the family rushed him to a hospital, where doctors performed blood tests.

Initial results showed normal kidney function, but further results on muscle enzymes are expected in three days.

Doctors instructed the boy to rest completely, advising him to keep his legs elevated, avoid walking for at least three days, and drink three litres of water per day to prevent further complications.

The student’s father expressed concern about the severity of the punishment and said that forcing children to undergo extreme physical exertion could lead to torn muscles or other serious injuries.

He urged schools to consider safer disciplinary alternatives, such as assigning cleaning duties.

A nurse who examined the boy reportedly revealed that two female students from the same school had recently come in with similar symptoms, raising further questions about the school’s disciplinary practices.

A similar case occurred in December last year, when a mother in Udon Thani spoke out after her 10 year old son was allegedly kneed by his teacher during school punishment. The grade 4 student was later diagnosed with rib cartilage inflammation.

The mother said her son and two classmates had been accused of teasing a female student. According to her, the teacher initially gave a verbal warning before escalating to physical punishment. While the other two boys were reportedly hit with a stick, her son was allegedly kneed in the abdomen and kicked in the leg.
