Southern Thai watermelon gets GI boost in sweet victory
Local farmers eye tourism and export gains as unique island crop earns national recognition

The Ministry of Commerce has officially designated the Koh Sukorn watermelon as Thailand’s first GI-certified watermelon variety, marking a significant milestone for the small island in Trang province.
Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang announced the news, calling it a victory for local identity and agricultural pride.
“This sweet, sea-grown watermelon is a standout. Its flavour, fine texture, and colourful flesh make it unique not only in taste but in origin.”
The Koh Sukorn watermelon is instantly recognisable by its light green rind and vibrant interior, ranging from red and orange to deep yellow. Its naturally sweet flavour is credited to the island’s fertile soil and coastal climate, which set it apart from inland-grown varieties.
According to local folklore, the melon’s seeds were introduced to the island generations ago by a Chinese sea captain seeking shelter from a monsoon. Since then, the fruit has become a cherished symbol of Koh Sukorn’s farming heritage.

This new designation marks Trang’s fourth GI product, following in the footsteps of:
-
Mueang Trang Roasted Pork, famous for its crispy skin and rich flavour.
-
Trang Pepper, prized for its aroma and heat.
-
Bao Yod Mueang Trang Rice, known for its soft texture and subtle fragrance.
Thailand’s Geographical Indication (GI) certification recognises products with unique characteristics tied to their specific place of origin. GI status not only preserves cultural heritage but also boosts consumer trust and adds value to local brands, reported Thai PBS World.

Napintorn hopes the recognition will increase demand for Koh Sukorn watermelon, both domestically and abroad, giving local farmers new opportunities in tourism and exports.
“GI certification helps protect and promote community products. It’s a powerful way to strengthen the local economy while preserving the region’s agricultural identity.”
Other well-known Thai GI products include Doi Tung Coffee from Chiang Rai, Phetchabun Sweet Tamarind, Phuket Pineapple, and Lamphun Brocade Thai Silk—all celebrated for their quality and regional significance.
