Out of tune: Thai man punches singer after his football team loses

A Thai man repeatedly punched a singer at a bar in the northern province of Lampang, allegedly out of anger after his favourite football team lost.
The 34 year old singer, Bas, filed a complaint at Mueang Lampang Police Station following the assault, which occurred while he was working at the bar on Sunday, May 4, around midnight. The incident took place just after he had finished his performance and was delivering a farewell message to the partygoers.
Bas revealed that he said to the audience, “I wish you all happiness and success with your favourite team.” He was about to pack away his guitar when the attacker, identified only as Jiab, suddenly walked quickly towards him.
Bas said he initially thought Jiab was approaching to give him a tip, but instead, Jiab punched him in the face and continued throwing punches until Bas fell from his chair to the ground. His guitar and shirt were stained with blood.
According to Bas, he rushed to a hospital and received nine stitches for a facial wound. He then went to the police station to file a complaint and submitted CCTV footage from the bar as evidence.

Bas insisted that he had never had any prior conflict with the attacker, either inside or outside the bar. He said he did not know the man personally and had never spoken to him before.

The victim suspects that Jiab may have been angered by the mention of football in his goodbye message. He believed that Jiab’s favourite team might have lost that night, and his comment might have triggered the violent outburst.

The Facebook news page News Lampang reported yesterday that the attacker later met Bas at the police station. Jiab claimed he was drunk and did not realise what he was doing or why. He issued an apology to the victim in front of the police.

Bas told News Lampang that he accepted the apology but would not withdraw the legal complaint. He insisted that he would pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law.
