Palang Pracharat to nominate Prayut as candidate for PM after election
The pro-junta leaning Palang Pracharat Party is poised to name Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha as its candidate for PM if it can win a majority at the March 24 general election. This revelation from a Palang Pracharat party source as reported by The Nation.
The current junta government’s Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana and Deputy PM Somkid Jatusripitak are also likely to be named in the list as his deputy and third in command, according to the source. The three have been leading figures in the NCPO-nominated military government.
The Constitution requires parties to propose three candidates as potential prime ministers should their parties win a majority.
Prayut, who led the military coup to topple the elected government back in May 2014, has remained elusive and reluctant to make clear commitments about his political ambitions. Even this week he prevaricated when asked a question about his political intentions.
The junta-sponsored charter gives two options to fill the top job in government: being proposed by a political party or by a two-thirds vote in the House of Representatives to install a non-elected Prime Minister.
