Former supermodel Naomi Campbell engaged in discussions with Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra yesterday, February 10, aiming to elevate Thailand’s presence in the global fashion industry by fostering the development of supermodels and fashion.

Campbell’s meeting with the prime minister at the Government House focused on strategies to position Thailand as a leading nation for supermodels and a hub for fashion.

Before she met with the prime minister, the 54 year old former model also conferred with Surapong Suebwonglee, chairperson of the National Soft Power Development Committee, among other officials.

The initiative to bring Campbell to Thailand was supported by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who expressed a desire to see Thai women and people of all genders represented on international catwalks while addressing Pheu Thai Party supporters, reported Bangkok Post.

In May last year, ex-Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin introduced Thailand’s traditional indigo-dyed fabric to leading Italian fashion houses in a bid to strengthen fashion trade and investment ties between Thailand and Italy.

During his official visit to Italy, Srettha met with executives from renowned fashion brands Zegna and Loro Piana, as well as representatives from the National Chamber of Italian Fashion. His visit also included discussions in Lombardy, where he explored investment opportunities in clean energy.

Srettha’s tour began at Zegna’s headquarters in Valdilana, famed for its high-quality wool, cashmere, and cotton textiles. The luxury brand, which has an outlet in Bangkok’s Siam Paragon and plans further expansion, has established strong commercial ties with Thailand.

Seeking to deepen this connection, Srettha presented Zegna with a sample of indigo-dyed fabric from Sakon Nakhon, a textile rich in historical and cultural significance. The fabric is promoted through initiatives led by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya.

The ex-PM later met with Loro Piana executives, who showed interest in incorporating Thai craftsmanship into their designs. The company is considering integrating traditional wickerwork into their bags and exploring the potential of indigo fabric for future collections.
