A Myanmar national’s body was discovered in a room in Udon Thani, allegedly dead for five days, despite reportedly being seen outside just two days prior. Police are investigating, suspecting involvement from two individuals who shared the accommodation.

At 4.20pm yesterday, March 12, Police Captain Supakorn Thumjeen, Deputy Inspector at Mueang Udon Thani Police Station, received a report of a death in a room located in the Railway Community, Udon Thani Municipality. Accompanied by a doctor from Udon Thani’s central hospital and volunteers from the Udon Thani Promotion Foundation, they arrived at the scene.

The room, number 143 on the first floor, was locked from the inside with a chain and padlock on the back door but showed signs of entry and exit over a metal fence at the back.

A plastic chair was found next to the fence with a pair of black sandals beside it, and a strong odour permeated the area. Mon, a 50 year old maintenance worker for the residence, discovered the body and awaited the police’s arrival.

Upon entry, the police found the body of Lamine, a 53 year old Myanmar national, in an advanced state of decomposition, lying on a bed. There were no signs of a struggle or theft, with the ceiling fan still running.

Lamine’s passport, clothes, and valuables were intact, but four methamphetamine pills were found on a table. It is believed the death occurred four to five days ago.

The room’s owner revealed that the room was rented nearly a month ago by a transgender woman named Nanthiya, approximately 30 years old, from Mueang Udon Thani district. She stayed with Lamine and another transgender woman.

Around three to four days earlier, Nanthiya requested the owner’s ID for a transaction but only a name was given due to expectations of a return. Since then, only Lamine was seen at the residence.

Approximately two days before the discovery, a conversation with Lamine was noted, questioning his small purchase of grilled pork, to which he smiled but did not reply. Suspicion arose from a foul odour, initially thought to be garbage-related.

Upon investigation, the odour led to Lamine’s room, where the body was discovered. The owner expressed surprise at the medical assessment of the estimated duration of death, having seen and spoken with Lamine two days prior.

Mon, the maintenance worker, recounted leaving for errands and returning to a strong odour, prompting him to inspect. Upon climbing the back fence and peering through a broken screen, he saw a hand pointing to the ceiling, confirming his fears.

Mon was also puzzled by the medical estimate, having fixed the fan in Lamine’s room two days prior and observed him coming and going on his motorcycle, reported KhaoSod.

Initially, the police sent the body to Udon Thani Central Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Efforts are underway to locate and question the two individuals who previously stayed with Lamine, and nearby CCTV footage is being reviewed for evidence.
