Family seeks probe after missing 18 year old girl found dead in river
A family asked police to investigate a possible hit-and-run after the body of an 18 year old Thai girl was found in a river in Kanchanaburi yesterday, February 23, three days after her disappearance.
The girl, identified only as A, was reported missing to Mueang Kanchanaburi Police Station on February 21 after she failed to return home at her usual time.
A’s grandmother told Channel 7 that A said she was going with friends to a temple fair in Dan Makham Tia district, Kanchanaburi, and left home on her motorcycle. She also told her grandmother she planned to visit Erawan Waterfall with friends the following day.
When A did not return home and could not be contacted, the family filed a police complaint. Police and local rescue workers began searching and later found her motorcycle overturned on a bridge over the Mae Klong River.
The search continued until the body of the teenager was found floating in the Mae Klong River yesterday morning. Her body was taken to hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

A’s grandmother said she had cared for A and her younger brother since they were toddlers after their parents divorced. She said their mother worked in another province to support the children financially and visited them occasionally.
She added that A’s father had never visited them or provided financial support. The grandmother also said she had recently given A 300 baht as a Chinese New Year gift.
A teacher told media that A was cheerful and got on well with classmates. The teacher said A did not speak much about her family to friends or teachers.

Channel 8 later reported that A’s motorcycle showed signs of a crash. This prompted the grandmother to ask police to look further into whether A’s death may be involved in a hit-and-run.
The grandmother said she did not believe her granddaughter died by suicide, saying A had not shown signs of distress before the incident.
Police told Channel 7 there were no security cameras at the location where the motorcycle was found. Officers are searching for CCTV in nearby areas to determine what caused the motorcycle to overturn.
