Man shoots temple disciple in Pathum Thani, claims self-defence

An altercation in Pathum Thani led to gunshots when a man opened fire and injured a temple disciple, claiming self-defence. Eyewitnesses shared that the pair had an ongoing dispute for quite some time leading up to the near-deadly confrontation.

Yesterday, March 16, officers from Pak Khlong Rangsit Police Station in Pathum Thani responded to reports of a shooting in front of a residence in Mueang Pathum Thani district.

Police, along with rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, arrived at the scene to find the injured victim, identified as 45 year old Phanchuen. He sustained gunshot wounds to his left arm and abdomen.

Police discovered two spent 9mm shell casings at the scene. The suspect, 56 year old Chaiwat Boonyong, allegedly fired two rounds before retreating into his home. After approximately 30 minutes of negotiations, police persuaded him to surrender and took him into custody for questioning at Pak Khlong Rangsit Police Station.

A witness, 32 year old Nate, stated that the two men had been arguing earlier in the day, although he was unsure of the exact cause. He mentioned that Phanchuen may have insulted the suspect’s family, which escalated the conflict.

Initially, police intervened to de-escalate the situation, but later, Chaiwat allegedly returned on his motorcycle and confronted Phanchuen before opening fire.

Another witness, 34 year old Nook, noted that tensions between the two had been ongoing for some time. He explained that the dispute began when Phanchuen asked Chaiwat to lower his voice while drinking alcohol, as there were elderly people nearby.

The conflict allegedly worsened over time, with previous incidents including warning shots fired by Chaiwat, which had already been reported to the police.

Pak Khlong Rangsit Police Chief, Police Colonel Phatthanachai Phamornphiboon, confirmed eyewitness reports that the suspect and victim had a history of frequent disputes. On the day of the incident, Phanchuen reportedly approached Chaiwat with a knife, prompting the suspect to fire two shots in response.

Chaiwat has since turned himself in along with the firearm used in the attack. Police have recorded evidence from the crime scene and are gathering further eyewitness statements. Police have charged Chaiwat with attempted murder, and legal proceedings are underway, reported KhaoSod.
