Police in Maha Sarakham arrested the abbot of Wat Nong Sim Yai after a drug test revealed methamphetamine (meth) use. The abbot admitted to using the drug, claiming curiosity as his motive.

Local officials from the Borabue district received complaints from residents about possible drug-related activities involving monks at Wat Nong Sim Yai. Responding to these concerns, they tested four monks for drugs. The results confirmed that 43 year old Sarawut Srichan and another monk tested positive for meth.

Sarawut confessed to taking the drug out of mere curiosity. He disclosed that a young monk, who had obtained the meth from local youths in the village, supplied him with the substance. Following this admission, officials coordinated with the district’s monastic authority to defrock both monks and transfer them to a rehabilitation programme.

Sarawut made headlines in June when he reunited with his mother after 37 years of separation. This emotional reunion drew significant media attention, highlighting his personal story.

“I just wanted to try it.”

Sarawut noted that a monk provided the drug in his temple who had connections with local teenagers.

The swift action from the local police underscores the seriousness with which they are addressing drug-related issues within the community, especially when it involves revered institutions like temples. The proactive approach aims to maintain the sanctity and respect of religious establishments while ensuring that those involved receive proper treatment and rehabilitation.

The incident has sparked discussions in the community about the influence of local youths on monks and the broader implications for the village’s social fabric. Residents expressed mixed feelings, with many shocked by the involvement of their religious leaders in drug use, while others commended the police for taking decisive action, reported KhaoSod.

In related news, police raided a temple in Loei province and arrested a monk caught with meth hidden in his quarters. The monk was immediately defrocked and charges have been filed.
