Korat Zoo has rolled out the red carpet for its latest superstar, a cute Patagonian mara, unveiled to eager visitors. While the newborn’s gender remains a mystery, its charm is undeniable, as the zoo’s director, Thanachon Khensing, proudly stated: “It’s capturing everyone’s attention.”

Currently, Korat Zoo boasts a trio of these enchanting creatures: one male, one female, and the new arrival. Native to the sprawling plains of Argentina and Paraguay, maras thrive in open landscapes dotted with shrubbery or semi-desert areas.

As the world’s third-largest rodent, following the capybara and beaver, maras are known for their gentle and placid nature. They are diurnal, nibbling on plants, grass, fruits, bark, and roots.

Veterinarian Suthipong Ratana assures fans that the newborn is in top-notch health, thanks to its doting parents. Ready for the spotlight, this young mara promises to delight children and visitors alike with its adorable antics.

Facing threats from human hunting and natural predators like tigers, foxes, and birds of prey, the Patagonian mara’s survival is precarious.

The competition for food from other herbivores, such as European rabbits and sheep, has further impacted their numbers. As such, raising awareness and promoting conservation efforts are crucial to protect these charming creatures from extinction.

Korat Zoo’s new mara not only adds to its family but also serves as a reminder of the delicate balance of wildlife and the importance of conservation. Keep an eye out for this little star as it makes its enchanting debut.
