Intoxicated man jumps into temple pond to cool off, drowns

A 36 year old man drowned in a temple pond in Chachoengsao after reportedly jumping into the water to cool off while intoxicated. The incident occurred at Ban Noen Sawang temple’s pond in the Sanam Chai Khet district today, February 18, when residents had warned him of the dangers but were unable to prevent the tragedy.
Village headman Thanachok Prakongsuk was alerted by locals about the incident, prompting him to inform Panom rescue volunteers from Thung Phraya to assist at the scene.
Despite efforts by the residents to aid, the man, identified as Chaiyan Wangsuk, had submerged in the pond, which measures 2 metres deep, 20 metres wide, and 40 metres long. Rescue volunteers from the Phanom Sarakham headquarters arrived with diving equipment to search for him.
Thanachok Prakongsuk recounted that earlier that evening, Chaiyan, who lived in Mueang Sawang subdistrict, was seen preparing to jump into the temple’s pond. The residents cautioned him against it due to his intoxicated state.
Though they initially managed to prevent him from jumping, he attempted a second time, possibly hitting an obstacle or experiencing a cramp, resulting in his sinking. Rescue efforts continued for nearly two hours in the dark and cold water until his body was found, reported KhaoSod.
The headman noted that the family did not question the cause of death. Sanam Chai Khet police officers instructed the Panom rescue team to transport the body to Sanam Chai Khet Hospital for an autopsy as per legal procedures. The family has been advised to prepare the necessary documents to claim the body for religious rites.
In similar news, a 39 year old man drowned in a village pond in Surin province while family and locals watched helplessly, with rescue teams taking four hours to recover his body. The incident occurred on February 5 in Baan Angkan, Mueang district.
Police from Tenmee Mueang station and Surin rescue teams arrived at the large pond, approximately 2 rai (3,200 sqm) in size.
