Danish man vanishes after no-show at Thailand airport

Family in limbo as troubled traveller slips off radar in Thai mystery

A Danish man who failed to board a flight home from Thailand in March has vanished without a trace, leaving behind a trail of confusion, concern and desperate pleas from loved ones as fears grow for his mental health and safety.

The baffling disappearance of Jakob Jensen, has sparked an international search effort after the Danish tourist seemingly vanished in Thailand in early March, despite initially being escorted to the airport for a flight home.

The 41 year old arrived in the country on February 2, this year, and was staying with a friend in the southern province of Ranong. But what began as a short stay quickly unravelled into a worrying chain of events that has left his family distraught.

Sensing Jensen was struggling mentally, his friend took him to Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok on March 1 to ensure he returned safely to Denmark. But the Danish tourist never boarded the plane. Instead, he slipped away, and hasn’t been heard from since.

His last known contact came the following day, March 2, when he emailed his mother. Despite his calm tone, it was the last anyone would hear from him. His phone was switched off by March 3, severing all contact.

In a strange twist, Jensen reappeared weeks later, spotted on March 19 at the Palmy Hotel in Ranong. Witnesses described his behaviour as confused and erratic. Just two days later, on March 21, he reportedly damaged hotel furniture, prompting police intervention.

Tourist officers helped him cover the costs and saw him off on a bus to Bangkok, where he claimed he would meet a friend. But it’s unclear if he ever made it.

Comments on Facebook, particularly under posts from his sister Anne Jensen, have painted a troubling picture of Jensen’s mental state. Eyewitnesses of the hotel incident corroborated his confusion and erratic behaviour.

Anne has since been spearheading the search online, appealing to the public for information and highlighting the urgent need to find her brother, who is believed to be without vital medication, reported ScandAsia.

The case has been taken up by the Royal Danish Embassy in Thailand, Thai Tourist Police, immigration officials and Danish police. An official international missing persons alert was issued on May 6.

Jensen’s family remains hopeful.

“We just want to know he’s safe,” Anne wrote online, urging anyone with information to contact her via Facebook or call the Danish Embassy in Thailand at +66 (0)2 343 1100.

As the days stretch on, loved ones are clinging to hope, that somewhere in Thailand, the Dane is still out there, waiting to be found.
