Covid cases surge with 70,000+ new infections in Thailand
There have been 154 Covid deaths in Thailand since January 1, according to the DDC

Over the past week, a significant increase in Covid-19 cases has been observed nationwide, with 76,161 new infections and 40 additional deaths, raising concerns about the ongoing outbreak.
The Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported that the data spans from May 24 to June 14, bringing the total number of infections since January 1 to 476,584. Of these new cases, 72,166 were hospitalised, while 3,995 were treated as outpatients. The national death toll for the year has reached 154.
Bangkok, Chon Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai, and Rayong reported the highest numbers of cases, with 17,945, 3,315, 3,027, 2,678, and 1,775 cases, respectively, in the past week.
Analysis by age group shows that individuals aged 60 and above remain the most affected, accounting for 14,757 cases.
The 30-39 and 20-29 age groups were also significantly impacted, with 14,561 and 13,889 cases, respectively, reflecting high levels of social interaction and activity among these working-age groups.

A weekly case trend graph from the DDC highlights a continued increase in infection rates through week 24, indicating sustained transmission across the nation. The ministry continues to urge adherence to preventive measures, such as wearing masks in crowded areas, practising hand hygiene, and receiving vaccination boosters, especially for high-risk groups.
Separately, yesterday, June 16, Dr Thira Woratanarat from the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University noted on his Facebook page that Covid claimed 116 lives over the past four weeks. This figure is 29 times higher than seasonal influenza deaths and nearly four times higher than deaths from other forms of pneumonia, reported Bangkok Post.

Dr Thira emphasised that Covid remains a serious public health threat and warned against complacency, as neglecting preventive measures could result in a further increase in fatalities. The rising death toll has prompted calls for renewed public awareness and precautions as Thailand continues to manage the endemic phase of Covid with fluctuating case numbers.
