Earthquake rattles Chiang Mai and Lamphun early today
An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 struck Mae On district in Chiang Mai, causing tremors felt as far as Lamphun. The seismic event, which occurred early today, August 15, lasted for five seconds and was reported by the Earthquake Surveillance Division.
The earthquake struck at 1.33am, with its epicentre located in Mae Tha subdistrict, Mae On district, Chiang Mai province. The quake’s depth was measured at 1 kilometre. Residents in the affected areas, including Mae On in Chiang Mai and parts of Lamphun, reported feeling the tremors.
“The earthquake lasted for about five seconds, and it was strong enough for people to feel it in neighbouring districts.”
The tremors were felt in various parts of Chiang Mai, including Saraphi, San Kamphaeng, San Sai, and Nong Hoi, as well as in Mueang Lamphun district. Residents took to social media and contacted the Earthquake Surveillance Division to share their experiences of the quake.
In the early hours of today, several residents were awakened by the tremors.
“It was around 1.30am when I felt the bed shaking. It only lasted a few seconds, but it was quite startling.”
The Earthquake Surveillance Division has been closely monitoring the situation. While the magnitude of 3.4 is considered minor, an earthquake of this size can still cause noticeable shaking and minor damage, especially if the epicentre is close to the surface, as was the case here.
“We advise residents to stay alert and follow safety procedures in case of aftershocks.”
Chiang Mai and its surrounding areas are not new to seismic activity. The region has experienced minor earthquakes in the past but today’s event serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of such occurrences. The Earthquake Surveillance Division continues to keep a vigilant watch on the area, ensuring that any further seismic activities are promptly reported and addressed.
Residents have been encouraged to stay informed through official channels for any updates. The Earthquake Surveillance Division also recommends having an emergency plan in place and knowing the safest spots in one’s home or workplace to take cover during an earthquake, reported KhaoSod.
