Visa lapse leads to arrest after failed attempt to hide from immigration police

Yesterday, April 30, immigration police in Chiang Mai apprehended a Chinese national who had overstayed his tourist visa in Thailand.

The arrest took place on Thipanet Road, Mueang district in Chiang Mai province, following a coordinated operation between the Chiang Mai Provincial Immigration Bureau and Immigration Division 5.

The man was charged with remaining in the kingdom after the expiration of his permission. Police informed him of his legal rights and charges before transferring him to the Chiang Mai City Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Efforts to deport him back to his home country are underway. The detainee confessed to staying in Thailand on a tourist visa and failing to apply for an extension when his visa expired, attempting to evade detection by police. He was eventually apprehended by immigration police investigators, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, Phuket immigration officers apprehended a 30 year old Russian man on April 8 for overstaying his visa by nearly a year. The arrest was part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal foreign residents and people with outstanding warrants, running from April 7 to April 11.

Police located the man, identified as Sergey, at a luxury hotel in central Phuket. An investigation revealed that he had exceeded his visa limit by 332 days.

During questioning, Sergey confessed to intentionally moving between accommodations to evade law enforcement. Officials did not disclose how he was financially supporting himself during his stay in Thailand.

Sergey has been charged under Section 81 of Thailand’s Immigration Act for overstaying his visa. The offense carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. Following legal proceedings, he will be deported and prohibited from re-entering the country.
