Indonesian authorities offer reward for getting tyre off crocodile
Any croc-whisperers out there? Authorities in Indonesia are offering a reward to anyone who can rescue a saltwater crocodile with a motorbike tyre stuck around its neck. The huge crocodile has had the tyre around its neck for several years. One brave croc wrangler will land an unspecified amount of cash, but it will mean coming face to face with the 4 metre reptile in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi, east Indonesia.
Local conservation authorities have tried, and failed, for years to find a way to help the croc after a video emerged showing it gasping for air, sparking worries the tyre is slowly killing the animal.
The province’s governor recently instructed his conservation agency to figure out how to remove the tyre. The agency has offered few details on the reward, or how the task might be completed. But the agency’s chief, who says the money will come out of his own pocket, warns that he’s not seeking amateurs, but rather people with a background in wildlife rescue.
