Thailand prepares for chill, temperature drop and strong winds
Thailand braces for a cold snap as a mass of cool air spreads across the country, bringing a drop in temperatures and strong winds. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts a temperature decrease of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius, with frost expected in some mountainous areas.
The latest weather forecast from the TMD reveals that a moderate high-pressure system from China has reached Thailand’s northeastern region. This system is expected to extend further, impacting the entire upper part of the country.
As a result, the northern and northeastern regions will experience cool to cold weather with strong winds, while the central region, including Bangkok, the eastern region, and upper southern region, will have cool mornings.
In the mountainous regions, the weather is anticipated to be very cold with some areas seeing frost. Locals are advised to take precautionary measures to protect their health due to the cold conditions. Moreover, the dry weather combined with strong winds could potentially lead to fire hazards, which should be watched out for.
The northeastern monsoon currently covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region is of moderate strength, resulting in scattered thunderstorms in the lower southern areas. The sea conditions in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are also moderate, with waves about 2 metres high in the lower Gulf and 1 to 2 metres high in the upper Gulf and Andaman Sea. In areas with thunderstorms, waves may exceed 2 metres. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
In terms of air quality, the upper part of Thailand is experiencing moderate levels of PM2.5 dust particles. This is attributed to the current wind patterns and ventilation conditions, which are classified as moderate. Residents in these areas should remain cautious, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
Cold weather
Forecast details for specific regions are as follows: In the north, the weather will be cool to cold with morning fog and a temperature drop of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature ranges from 16 to 19 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius.
The mountain peaks will be particularly cold with temperatures dropping to between 5 and 13 degrees Celsius. Northeasterly winds are expected at speeds of 10 to 15 kilometres per hour.
The northeastern region will also experience cool to cold weather with strong winds and a temperature decrease of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius. Temperatures are expected to range from 11 to 19 degrees Celsius at their lowest and from 27 to 31 degrees Celsius at their highest.
Mountain peaks here will see temperatures between 7 and 14 degrees Celsius, with winds reaching speeds of 10 to 30 kilometres per hour.
Central Thailand will have cool mornings with strong winds and a temperature drop of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures will be between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures will range from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. Winds from the northeast will blow at speeds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
In the eastern region, similar cool morning conditions with strong winds and a temperature decrease of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius are expected. The minimum temperature will be between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures ranging from 30 to 33 degrees Celsius. Northeasterly winds will reach 15 to 35 kilometres per hour, with sea waves around 1 metre high and 2 metres offshore.
In the upper southern region (east coast), the weather will be cool in the morning with strong winds and thunderstorms affecting 30% of the area, particularly in provinces such as Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Minimum temperatures will be between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, and maximum temperatures will range from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius.
Northeasterly winds will blow at speeds of 15 to 35 kilometres per hour, with sea waves of 1 to 2 metres and waves exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
The lower southern region (east coast) will experience similar conditions, with northeasterly winds at speeds of 20 to 35 kilometres per hour and waves around 2 metres high, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorm areas.
In the western southern region, thunderstorms are expected in 20% of the area, mainly in Trang and Satun provinces. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius, with maximum temperatures between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius.
Northeasterly winds will reach speeds of 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, with sea waves around 1 metre high and more than 1 metre offshore, reported KhaoSod.
Bangkok and surrounding areas will have cool mornings with strong winds and a temperature decrease of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature will range from 21 to 23 degrees Celsius, and the maximum temperature will be between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius. Northeasterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour.
