Thailand braces for heavy rain and potential flash floods

Residents brace for floods and landslides as storms sweep across provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecasted significant weather changes for the upcoming week, with heavy rainfall expected to affect 80% of the country.

The weather from September 2 to September 8 will see monsoons impacting lower north Thailand, lower northeastern regions, central areas including Bangkok and its vicinity, the east, and the south. This is due to the monsoon trough sliding across the central, eastern, and lower northeastern regions. The southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is predicted to weaken to a moderate level.

From September 7 to September 8, Thailand will continue to experience heavy rainfall, especially in the east, as the monsoon trough shifts over the north and northeast. The southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will remain at a moderate intensity.

Today, September 3, strong wind waves are expected in the upper Andaman Sea, with waves 2 to 3 metres and over 3 metres in areas with thunderstorms. Moderate winds and waves are anticipated in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, with waves around 2 metres and above 2 metres in stormy areas.

From September 4 to September 8, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will see moderate winds, with the upper Andaman Sea experiencing wave heights of about 2 metres, while the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves ranging from 1 to 2 metres, exceeding 2 metres in stormy areas.

Residents, particularly in the eastern and western southern regions, are advised to exercise caution due to potential hazards from heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could lead to flash floods and forest runoffs, especially in hilly areas near watercourses and low-lying areas. Mariners should navigate carefully and avoid sailing in thunderstorm-prone areas throughout this period, with small boats in the upper Andaman Sea advised to remain ashore until today, September 3.
