First day of Thailand’s rainy season: heavy rain warning for 36 provinces

Today, May 13, marks the first day of Thailand’s rainy season. A low pressure cell from upper Vietnam is expected to cause heavy rain and potential flash flooding in 36 provinces in the kingdom. The Meteorological Department advises people to be aware of the dangers caused by heavy rainfall. Sailors, especially on the Andaman Coast, should expect tall waves and thunderstorms and should proceed with caution.

The rain is expected to reduce levels of dust and smog significantly.

Northern Thailand

Heavy rainfall is expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Phayao, Nan, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun and Tak provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 24 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 33 – 36 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 10 – 20 kilometres per hour.

Northeast Thailand

Heavy rainfall is expected in Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakon, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 24 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 30 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 10 – 20 kilometres per hour.

Central Thailand

Heavy rainfall is expected in Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lop Buri and Saraburi provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 23 – 26 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 34 – 36 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 10 – 20 kilometres per hour.

Eastern Thailand

Heavy rainfall is expected in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 25 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 31 – 35 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 15 – 30 kilometres per hour.

Waves are expected to be 1 metre tall or taller in thunderstorm areas.

Southern Thailand (East Coast)

Heavy rainfall is expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 24 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 33 – 34 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 15 – 30 kilometres per hour.

Waves are expected to be 1 metre tall or taller in thunderstorm areas.

Southern Thailand (West Coast)

Heavy rainfall is expected in Ranong and Phang Nha provinces. Thunderstorms will occur in 60% of these areas.

Minimum temperature: 24 – 26 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 30 – 34 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 15 – 30 kilometres per hour.

Waves are expected to be 1 metre tall or taller in thunderstorm areas.

Bangkok and Surrounding Areas

Thunderstorms will occur in 30% of Bangkok and surrounding areas, mostly in the afternoon and evening.

Minimum temperature: 25 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Maximum temperature: 33 – 36 degrees Celsius.
Winds: 10 – 20 kilometres per hour.
