The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a collision between a train and a truck, which occurred at a railway crossing between Kabin Buri and Nong Sang stations in Prachin Buri province on March 8.

Despite reports suggesting the absence of barriers or warning signals at the site, the SRT confirmed that all safety measures were operational, but the truck disregarded the signals and barriers, leading to the incident.

Weerit Amrapal, the Governor of the SRT, explained that an investigation revealed the accident site was equipped with an automatic half-barrier at kilometre marker 163/1-2.

The barriers, lights, and warning sounds were functioning correctly at the time of the collision, and the barrier had already descended to block the road.

Preliminary checks indicated that the train driver had reduced speed in compliance with safety standards upon nearing the crossing. However, a 10-wheeler truck ignored the traffic signals and automatic barrier, manoeuvring in a zigzag pattern across the tracks, which resulted in the crash, Weeraphat said.

“The SRT emphasises the importance of strict adherence to traffic laws, especially at railway crossings.”

According to the Land Traffic Act of 1979, Section 62, when railway warning signs or barriers are present, drivers must slow down and stop at least 5 metres from the tracks, reported KhaoSod.

The SRT Governor assured that legal action will be taken against those violating traffic regulations and causing damage to SRT property. This enforcement is crucial to ensuring the safety of all road users.
