Retired teacher dies in canal accident, wife saved by farmer

A tragic accident occurred when a retired teacher, driving a Toyota Fortuner to pick up his wife from the airport, lost control of his vehicle, which subsequently plunged into a canal.

The incident, which took place yesterday, March 24 at 4pm, resulted in the husband’s death, but a local duck farmer managed to save the wife’s life.

The accident was reported to Police Lieutenant Dechrith Saengjunsri, deputy inspector at Sainoi Police Station, Nonthaburi province, who coordinated with forensic specialists and rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

At the accident scene in the Khlong Lat Thawi Phon canal along Road 340 from Taling Chan to Suphan Buri, in Sai Yai subdistrict, Sainoi district, Nonthaburi province, a Toyota Fortuner with the registration number 3 กย 7766 Bangkok was found overturned in the water.

The bridge crossing the canal displayed long skid marks indicating the vehicle’s descent. The driver, identified as 69 year old former teacher, Phuttipong, was retrieved from the vehicle by 25 year old duck farmer, To, who had initially rescued Phuttipong’s 64 year old wife.

Unfortunately, Phuttipong succumbed to his injuries, while his wife was earlier taken to Sainoi Hospital by rescue teams.

To recounted that he was sitting under a jujube tree near the canal with his nine year old brother when he heard a loud noise from the road. He witnessed the vehicle plummet from the bridge into the canal, nearly submerging.

He immediately jumped into the water to rescue the woman from the passenger side, helping her to the canal’s edge and encouraging her to stay conscious. The woman asked him to assist her husband, the driver.

Despite difficulties in locating the seatbelt release, To managed to pull Phuttipong from the vehicle, but he had already died. The woman sustained injuries, including a cut on her neck and an open wound on her chin.

Relatives of Phuttipong explained that he was returning from Suvarnabhumi International Airport after picking up his wife, who had visited their daughter in Cambodia. They were en route to Suphan Buri province when the accident occurred, reported KhaoSod.

Initial investigations by officials suggest Phuttipong may have fallen asleep, as there were no brake marks at the scene. The body was sent to a hospital for further examination and legal procedures, after which it will be released to the family for religious rites.
