A man was apprehended after attempting to steal roasted pork from a noodle shop in Udon Thani, claiming hunger drove him to theft.

Employees managed to detain him before handing him over to the police. The incident unfolded yesterday, February 17, when Police Lieutenant Colonel Thirayothin Sapsin received a report of a theft at Tee Hi Noodle Shop in the Sanchai Thani Village, Udon Thani Municipality.

Initially, the noodle shop’s employees recorded a video capturing the thief’s first attempt to steal. However, upon learning that the shop had contacted the police, the suspect fled. The employees pursued him, leading to a scuffle in which the thief was injured and subsequently surrendered.

When the police arrived, they found the suspect, Boontham Ratchsila, a 42 year old scrap collector, in custody with visible bruises and a bleeding nose. Nopphon Kaewmanee, a 44 year old employee, had detained him, while Sirirat Sritanyarat, a 23 year old employee and Kaewmanee’s girlfriend, sat exhausted nearby. The police then escorted Boontham to the Mueang Udon Thani Police Station.

Boontham confessed to having consumed two methamphetamine pills earlier that morning. He claimed he was not attempting to steal anything that day, only searching for water in an ice container.

Nonetheless, he admitted to previously stealing roasted pork from the shop due to hunger and lack of money. He confessed to grilling some of the stolen pork and drying the remainder.

Despite apologising and asking for forgiveness, he claimed the employees retaliated with punches and kicks, leaving him battered.

Rujira Sutthiwongkorn, the 38 year old owner of the noodle shop, revealed that the shop does not offer dine-in services, instead taking orders via an application and catering at outside events. Every morning at 7am, ingredients are delivered and stored in an ice container that is not locked.

Though theft had not been an issue before, three days ago, someone stole 7 kilogrammes of roasted pork and 3 kilogrammes of pork fat, leaving only bones behind. This resulted in a significant loss, as the ingredients were intended for catering, reported KhaoSod.

The shop had to purchase more supplies, risking their customer credibility. When the thief returned, he initially denied the theft but confessed upon being threatened with police involvement. He attempted to flee but was caught by the employees.
