Bangkok beats out hundreds of cities to land in the world’s top 5 for food
The metrics behind Bangkok’s 2026 foodie ranking, from street food experiences to meal prices
Bangkok has just been named one of the best food cities in the world, and honestly, if you’ve eaten here, you already know that. A new study by UK-based long-haul travel specialists Travelbag ranked Bangkok fifth on their list of the world’s top foodie destinations for 2026.
The ranking looked at four key factors across 36 cities globally: the number of food-related activities available, average meal costs, social media presence, and annual Google search volume. Bangkok didn’t just scrape into the top five as it dominated in the categories that matter most to anyone who actually wants to eat well.

What the study measured
Travelbag started with a seed list of 36 cities and scored each one across five metrics: average meal cost at a mid-range restaurant, number of food and drink activities, Instagram post volume, TikTok post volume, and annual UK Google search demand for “[city] food.” The combined scores determined the final rankings.
Why Bangkok made the top five

More food experiences than anywhere else on the list
Bangkok topped the entire study with 406 food-related activities — more than any other city in the top 10, and nearly four times Dubai’s count of 180. We’re talking cooking classes, night market tours, street food crawls, and everything in between. No other city on the list comes close.
For travellers who want to do more than just sit at a restaurant table, Bangkok is in a league of its own.
The best value in the top 10
A three-course meal for two at a mid-range Bangkok restaurant averages just £24 — the cheapest in the entire top 10 by some distance. For context, Toronto averages £65 for the same meal, Chicago hits £76, and even Seoul sits at £41. Bangkok delivers quality and variety at a price point that lets you eat your way across the city without watching your wallet.
Where Bangkok trails the pack
To be fair, Bangkok’s social media numbers tell a different story. With 685,000 Instagram posts and 42,400 TikTok posts under its location hashtag, it sits well behind cities like Melbourne (3.1 million Instagram posts) and Toronto (193,900 TikTok posts). Western cities clearly dominate the food content space online.
That gap likely reflects audience demographics more than food quality. Bangkok’s food scene is experienced and talked about in person, not just filtered and posted. But it’s worth noting for anyone who uses social media as their primary travel research tool: Bangkok is underrepresented online relative to what it actually offers.

How the rest of the top 10 stacks up

Dubai, Melbourne, and Toronto lead the way
Dubai took the top spot overall, boosted by its variety of international dining options and a strong social media showing — over 2.2 million Instagram posts and 148,000 on TikTok. Melbourne came second on the back of 3.1 million Instagram posts and a diverse food culture spanning Korean BBQ in Healeys Lane to winery visits in the Yarra Valley. Toronto ranked third largely on social buzz, with the highest TikTok count in the entire study at 193,900 posts.
Singapore rounds out the top four
Singapore placed fourth with 105 food activities and an average meal cost of £53 — a strong showing that reflects its reputation for mixing hawker stall culture with Michelin-starred dining.
Bangkok’s case is built on the ground, not the grid

Bangkok’s fifth-place finish isn’t built on follower counts or filtered flat lays. It’s built on over 400 ways to engage with food, prices that make the city accessible to every kind of traveller, and a culinary culture that stretches from 30-baht pad thai on a plastic stool to some of Southeast Asia’s most respected fine dining.
The ranking confirms what food lovers who’ve spent time here have always said: Bangkok is one of the best cities in the world to eat in. If your 2026 travel plans are even partly shaped by food, this city should be near the top of your list.
