Boy charged with murder of Bhim Kohli in Leicester

14-year-old faces court for murder of 80-year-old Bhim Kohli

A 14-year-old boy faces charges for the murder of 80-year-old Bhim Kohli. For legal reasons, the boy’s identity is withheld. He is scheduled to appear at Leicester Youth Court on Thursday morning. Mr Kohli was assaulted while walking his dog in Franklin Park, on the city’s outskirts, on Sunday evening. He sustained severe injuries just moments away from his home in Braunstone Town and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

After the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) approved the murder charge, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Andrew Baxter emphasised the importance of a fair trial for the youth. He urged against any reporting or online commentary that might prejudice the case.

Mr Kohli’s family, through a statement released by the police, remembered him as a “loving and caring” individual. They expressed that Bhim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished his time with his grandchildren. The family highlighted his joyful and talkative nature, noting he was the family joker who loved to outsmart them with a smile.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Kohli died due to a neck injury, with additional tests pending, according to Leicestershire Police. On Tuesday, four other children—a 14-year-old girl and three children aged 12—were arrested on suspicion of murder but were later released without further action.

Leicestershire Police referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to previous interactions with the victim. Following further communication with the watchdog, the force has now made a mandatory referral.
