Teenager convicted for Holly Newton’s fatal stabbing in Hexham

Sentencing set for teenager convicted in Holly Newton's stabbing case

A teenager has been convicted for the stabbing of 15-year-old Holly Newton in January of the previous year. The 17-year-old boy, whose identity remains undisclosed, acknowledged manslaughter but refuted murder charges, claiming he “blacked out” during the incident.

His sentencing is scheduled for October 31 and November 1 at the same court. Holly sustained 36 injuries in the assault that occurred in an alley in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023, as presented to Newcastle Crown Court.

Her grieving mother, Micala Trussler, spoke outside the court: “Holly should have been collecting her GCSE results last week, but instead, her future was cruelly taken from her. We are thankful for the support from many as we continue to navigate life without Holly.”

Her mother had contacted the police about the 16-year-old boy, known to Holly, and it was decided that Holly should not leave school if he was outside, the court heard. The prosecution argued that the defendant, due to his age, cannot be named, and followed Holly around the town centre for approximately 45 minutes while she visited shops with friends after school.

Holly had confided to a friend just hours before the stabbing that the boy was “basically stalking her,” the court was informed. The boy approached Holly outside a pizza shop, asked to speak with her, and then attacked her with a knife he carried.

A 16-year-old boy Holly had recently started dating was also hospitalised after trying to save her. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries as the defendant stabbed him until bystanders intervened. Testifying via video link, the boy stated he could not recall stabbing Holly but remembered taking a bus to Hexham and wandering around the town.

Holly’s devastated family honoured her memory after her death: “Holly was a popular girl, loved by many across the North East. She excelled in dancing, spending much of her time in classes and competitions nationwide. She had her whole life ahead of her, and we are still grappling with her loss. Rest in peace, our baby girl—we love you dearly, and our lives will never be the same without you. You touched so many hearts and will be missed by all your family and loved ones.”

They mentioned her favourite place was Alton Towers, where she enjoyed the biggest rollercoasters. They also noted, “Holly was passionate about her family, disliked upsetting people, and always aimed to make others smile.” In February 2023, mourners wore purple at her funeral to honour Holly and her favourite colour.
