Gaza protestors demand peace at Democratic convention

Protesters clash with police as calls for Gaza peace dominate convention

Thousands marched through Chicago, demanding peace in Gaza and an “end to genocide”.

Clashes erupted between police and protesters when some crossed the security perimeter. Inside the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, a delegate displayed a large banner protesting “genocide” during President Joe Biden’s speech.

Security had to drown out the protest with signs supporting Biden before escorting the delegate out. Several delegates wore T-shirts reading Democrats for Palestinian Rights, and calls for a ceasefire echoed from the podium multiple times.

The 2024 convention has not seen the scale of protests or clashes reminiscent of the 1968 Democratic convention against the Vietnam War.

However, the Gaza conflict, where over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than two million displaced, has permeated middle America and mainstream politics.

Gaza and the 2024 Election

Mohammad Khatib, a Palestinian-American delegate from Florida, expressed his concerns about the Democratic Party’s support among Arab-American, Muslim-American, and progressive communities.

He stated that Biden had lost their support and confidence, hoping Kamala Harris would be more vocal and present a better perspective. Khatib warned that failing to regain these communities’ support could cost Democrats the election.

He emphasised that the killings of tens of thousands are unacceptable, expressing a sense of betrayal from Arab Americans towards the Democrats, although they do not want Donald Trump to win.

Amin Ghoneim, a delegate from Georgia, acknowledged the issue’s impact within Democratic ranks. He noted that many feel it is a significant concern but mentioned that Muslim communities are willing to give Harris a chance. He suggested the internal divide might have been worse if Biden remained the candidate.

Acknowledging the protests, Biden addressed the issue in his speech later on Monday night. He conceded that the protesters had a valid point, noting that “a lot of innocent people” were being killed “on both sides”.

He reiterated his proposal for a package deal involving hostage return and a ceasefire, expressing hope for its success.

Biden outlined his ongoing efforts to bring hostages home, end the war in Gaza, and achieve peace and security in the Middle East.

He mentioned a recent proposal aimed at preventing a broader conflict, reuniting hostages with their families, and delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza to alleviate civilian suffering and secure a ceasefire.

The success of Biden’s efforts, the response from Palestinians and American protesters, and the impact on voting decisions in swing states remain to be seen. Nonetheless, the issue keeps Democrats on the defensive during an otherwise celebratory week.
