Spiders flood UK homes early, alarming residents

UK homes see early spider invasion, driven by males seeking mates

A surge of spiders is making an early appearance in the UK this year, marking the start of the annual “spider season.” Typically, this period begins in early September and ends by the start of October, as spiders venture out in search of mates. Social media is filled with Brits expressing their alarm over the sudden influx of these arachnids in their homes.

This time of year often sees an increase in spider sightings indoors, driven by their quest for romance. Last year, spider expert Richard Jones told viewers that most of the spiders seen scurrying around homes are usually male house spiders seeking mates.

Jones explained that the fast-moving spiders indoors are often males on a mating mission, adding, “Even the cleanest, smallest house will likely have 20 to 40 spiders.” Social media users have shared their encounters, with one posting: “UK spiders are no joke, could’ve killed me in my sleep.”

Another person recounted an unsettling experience: “I’m home alone in the bedroom, everything is quiet, but I can hear a spider tippy tapping on the carpet floor and I’m just…” Most indoor spiders are ‘house spiders,’ descended from ancestors in warmer regions like North Africa or the Mediterranean.

Jones mentioned that older houses, like his Victorian home, with numerous cracks and crevices, could easily harbour thousands of spiders. He reassured that nearly all spiders in the UK are harmless and unable to bite humans, though he cautioned that false widow spiders can inflict a more painful bite but only when threatened.

During spider season, male spiders predominantly invade homes, with about 80% of these intruders being males in search of a mate. Professor Adam Hart, an entomologist at the University of Gloucestershire, noted that female spiders typically remain stationary indoors, contributing to the seasonal surge in spider sightings.
