Children discharged after Southport attack

Victims released from Alder Hey after Southport attack

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital confirmed that all children under their care following the Southport attack have been “safely discharged home”. The attack at The Hart Space community centre on Monday, 29 July resulted in the deaths of six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar. Five other children were critically injured, and three had unspecified injuries.

The children received treatment in hospitals across Liverpool and Manchester. Two adults, who tried to protect the children, were also injured. On Tuesday, Alder Hey in Liverpool expressed their relief that all the children under their care had been discharged. They thanked everyone involved in the response, including NHS colleagues, Merseyside Police, and North West Ambulance Service. They also extended gratitude to those who sent well-wishes.

A peaceful vigil took place in Southport a week after the stabbings. Children blew bubbles, and attendees left flowers and heart-shaped balloons. Local shops, arcades, charities, and the victims’ families donated many of the bubbles. Teddy bears and toys were also left in memory of the victims at the “Swifties Bubble Blow – Kisses To Heaven” event. Many children at the vigil wore pink and left chalk messages on the pavement in front of The Atkinson arts centre.

Axel Rudakubana, who turns 18 on Wednesday, is accused of the stabbings. Judge Andrew Menary KC lifted reporting restrictions on Thursday, allowing Rudakubana to be named. This decision aimed to prevent the spread of “misinformation” after a false name circulated online led to disorder and violence in Southport. Rudakubana’s plea and trial preparation hearing is set for 25 October at Liverpool Crown Court, with a provisional trial date scheduled for 20 January next year.
