Azores High to bring warm August bank holiday weather

Warm August bank holiday weather likely, but no heatwave for UK

The Azores High, associated with the pleasant weather of Portugal and Spain, is predicted to bring strong August sunshine, according to forecasters. This ridge of high pressure, currently over the Atlantic Ocean southwest of the UK, might gain enough momentum to impact the UK. If it does, temperatures are expected to rise once more.

This warm spell could align with the August Bank Holiday weekend. Early forecasts indicate that Southeast England may experience the warmest weather on the Monday. However, forecasters caution that despite the Azores High, a heatwave in the UK is unlikely. Temperatures won’t meet the required threshold over consecutive days, unlike last month.

Meteorologist Jo Farrow from Netweather commented on the blog: “Looking ahead to the Bank Holiday weekend, the UK might be stuck in the westerly flow off the Atlantic with showers from the west but also bright spells. The Azores High is trying to settle our weather if it can build in from the southwest.”

Yesterday, temperatures in Cavendish, Suffolk exceeded 26C, with a peak of 34.8C in Cambridge on Monday, the highest of the year. Rain is expected next week before the anticipated arrival of the Azores High.

Ms Farrow noted: “Rain over Ireland on Monday will sweep over Britain on Tuesday, leading to a cool, fresher midweek for the UK. Ernesto, currently a hurricane heading for Bermuda on Saturday, should reach Newfoundland early on Tuesday as a post-tropical hurricane and then cross the North Atlantic, interacting with the jet stream.

“The ECM model predicts ex-Ernesto will bring very wet and windy weather to northern Scotland on Wednesday night. The GFS model suggests a more widespread unsettled and windy day on Thursday for the UK from Ernesto’s remnants approaching from the west.”

ECM and GFS are different weather models used by meteorologists for their forecasts. The analysis indicates potential flooding this week due to downpours sweeping eastwards throughout the day and evening.
