Deadly inmate brawl disrupts new year at Pattani Prison
Chaos erupted at Pattani Prison as a brawl among inmates left one dead and 12 injured. The altercation, involving sharp metal weapons, followed a heated dispute during an internal football match yesterday. Pattani’s police force quickly responded to the incident that marred the new year celebrations.
Upon receiving reports of a violent clash at the central prison in Pattani, police officer Jeffrey Sailamanakul hastened to the scene. Ambulances rushed 12 injured inmates to Pattani Hospital, with injuries ranging from severe stab wounds to bruises and head injuries.
Tragically, one inmate succumbed to fatal injuries sustained from stabbings around the torso and multiple bruises.
Investigations reveal that the commotion began at a futsal tournament organised on December 31 last year, intended to encourage exercise among inmates. However, tensions flared yesterday morning, January 1 during the competition, leading to heated arguments between players and spectators.
This escalated into violence, with some inmates wielding sharp metal implements before prison staff managed to regain control.
“The altercation stemmed from a minor disagreement during the futsal match, which unfortunately spiralled into a violent confrontation,” stated an officer involved in the initial investigation.
Currently, police are conducting thorough inquiries to identify those responsible for the melee and will proceed with legal action accordingly, reported KhaoSod.
