Five guards questioned after assault on foreign tourist in Pattaya

Tourist police in Pattaya, on March 15, tracked down five security guards linked to a viral video showing a tourist being assaulted at an entertainment venue on Walking Street, as officers move to pursue legal action.

The video, recorded by a tourist and shared online, appears to show security guards surrounding and attacking a foreign tourist on Walking Street in South Pattaya, Chon Buri. The footage prompted heavy criticism on social media and once again raised concerns about the city’s tourism image.

Police said the incident was seen as damaging to tourism and potentially in breach of government policy, prompting officers to take action.

The five guards, described as venue security staff, were brought in for questioning to establish what happened.

During questioning, the guards claimed the incident began at about 3.55am, when the venue was asking customers to leave because it was closing.

They claimed the foreign tourist tried to enter as the venue was closing, and that guards stopped them and told them the venue had already closed.

The guards further claimed the tourist became angry, leading to an argument and a confrontation. They said additional guards came out to the front of the venue after noticing the situation escalating and again attempted to get the tourist to leave.

They alleged the tourist attacked a guard first, after which a scuffle broke out, matching what was seen in the video.

Police recorded the guards’ details and arranged for all five to meet investigators at Pattaya City Police Station for legal proceedings, reported Siam Chon News.

Police added that the foreign tourist involved, who was reportedly injured, has not filed a complaint or made any formal request.

Despite that, officers said they would continue to proceed with the case and also plan to propose to the Chon Buri governor that the venue be temporarily closed if deemed appropriate.

In a separate incident, Pattaya police have summoned three security guards for questioning following a viral video showing an American tourist being assaulted on Pattaya Soi 6. The incident has drawn mixed opinions online.
