Elderly Thai man walks 14 days to find missing son
An elderly Thai man, partially blind and determined to find his long-lost son, embarked on a remarkable 14-day journey on foot from Nakhon Ratchasima to Chon Buri.
This poignant tale of parental love and perseverance unfolds as 85 year old Lung Lek Wongjaiya made the arduous trek with a cane, driven by the hope of reuniting with his eldest son, whom he hadn’t seen in nearly a decade.
The journey began after Lung Lek travelled to Nakhon Ratchasima, searching for his son, only to discover that he had moved away. Despite inquiries from neighbours, Lung Lek was left without any clues to his son’s whereabouts.
Having spent the 2,000 baht (US$60) he had brought with him on motorcycle taxi fares, he found himself with only 8 baht left. This financial constraint compelled him to make the long walk back to his hometown of Koh Pho in Phanasnikhom district, Chon Buri.
Throughout the journey, Lung Lek faced numerous challenges, including complete blindness in his right eye, which made navigating the distance even more difficult. With only one set of clothes, he had to rest wherever he could find shelter. Yet, the kindness of strangers provided him with sustenance and support along the way.
“I was given food and water by kind people. Some even gave me clothes and a jacket to keep warm,” Lung Lek recounted.
One particularly compassionate local, upon encountering Lung Lek near a temple, offered him soybean milk, 20 baht and a boxed meal to aid him on his journey. These acts of generosity were crucial, as Lung Lek’s determination to see his son again kept him moving forward.
In a candid moment, Lung Lek shared his family circumstances, mentioning that he has two children, including his son in Nakhon Ratchasima and a daughter who resides in Rayong.
His journey was not just one of physical endurance but also an emotional testament to the bonds of family and the longing to reconnect, reported The Pattaya News.
Recognising Lung Lek’s plight, a reporter offered assistance by securing a bus ticket for his return to Chon Buri. The minibus owner extended a special fare, ensuring Lung Lek could safely reach home.
Even as Lung Lek returns, his search for his son continues, with several relevant agencies reportedly stepping in to help locate his son.
