Coconut calamity: Thai man’s high-stakes suicide leap near Pattaya
The Sawang Rojanatham Sathan Foundation yesterday received a call about a desperate Thai man’s suicide attempt from a coconut tree near HomePro in Bang Saray, just south of Pattaya. Rescue teams dashed to the chilling scene.
When they arrived, they found 38 year old Veeranan Jitcharoen sitting by the roadside, stark naked and covered in scrapes, wincing with severe back pain. Acting promptly, the rescue team administered first aid before whisking him away to Wat Yan Sangwararam Hospital for more comprehensive treatment.
A compassionate passerby, who stumbled upon Veeranan in his dire state, offered him clothing and alerted emergency services.
Veeranan confided to his Good Samaritan that overwhelming despair from losing his job drove him to the drastic decision of climbing a coconut tree to end it all. Miraculously surviving the perilous fall, he managed to make his way to the roadside, where help finally reached him, reported Pattaya Mail.
The police are now working closely with Veeranan’s family to ensure he gets the necessary support and care during this challenging time.
Suicides in Pattaya are unfortunately not uncommon, and locals, albeit insensitively, have coined the term “The Pattaya Flying Club” due to the frequency of these tragic attempts.
Only two weeks ago a Norwegian expatriate was discovered dead in harrowing circumstances in the early hours of the morning in his Pattaya hotel room after allegedly inflicting horrific injuries upon himself. Shortly after 4am, on October 20, the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre received a frantic alert about a foreigner’s disturbing behaviour and self-harm in a second-floor room on Soi 14.
Upon arrival, local police and brave rescue crews were met with a gruesome scene: the man, stark naked, lay in front of the bathroom, bleeding profusely from deep facial cuts. The room painted a chilling picture of chaos and violence—with blood stains and shattered glass strewn across the bed, pointing to a fierce struggle.
