American man hit by car while crossing road in Chon Buri

An American man was critically injured after being hit by a car while crossing a road in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri, in the early hours of today, April 2, prompting police to review CCTV footage.

The Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya City Rescue Unit received a report at 1.46am of a crash on the inbound Bangkok carriageway of Sukhumvit Road, near the Central Pattaya underpass. Rescue volunteers and police from Pattaya City Police Station were sent to the scene.

Police found a white Toyota Yaris with its front-end damaged and its windscreen shattered. The driver was identified as 40 year old Wannawipha, who had her Turkish boyfriend in the passenger seat.

The injured pedestrian was identified 46 year old James, a United States national. Rescue workers provided first aid before transporting him to the hospital.

Wannawipha told police she was driving to take her boyfriend to the airport when the man ran across the road in front of her car. She said she braked but could not stop in time and struck him, after which she pulled over and called for assistance.

Siam Chon News reported that an investigator from Pattaya City Police Station photographed the scene and arranged for a review of CCTV footage as the case proceeds.

Some social media users criticised the pedestrian’s decision to cross the road at that point, saying it was dangerous. Others questioned why he did not use a pedestrian bridge, arguing drivers would have little chance to brake in time.
