Vow-ndalism: Bride-to-be wrecks fiancé’s home over unpaid dowry
Pa Faek subdistrict in Phon Charoen district, Bueng Kan province, became the centre of a domestic drama when a bride-to-be went on a rampage, demolishing her future husband’s home over an unpaid dowry.
The incident unfolded the 22 year old woman, Wanida, was left fuming when her fiancé, 23 year old Wasan, could only muster up 50,000 baht instead of the 150,000 baht she demanded.
Wanida yesterday, January 5, reportedly stormed into Wasan’s house in a furious, inebriated state, wreaking havoc on the property, reported KhaoSod. The local online community quickly picked up on the mayhem, sharing the jaw-dropping saga far and wide.
Wasan’s 73 year old grandmother, Boonmee, stepped forward, showing reporters the trail of destruction left in the wake of the rampage. Broken furniture, smashed belongings, and a bruised ego were all on display.
Despite the chaos, Wasan insists he still loves his fiancée.
“She hit me, but I didn’t fight back. She hasn’t reached out or apologised since. I didn’t want this to become public. I just want her to make amends and pay for the damages. As for the marriage, it’s up in the air. I had agreed to pay 50,000 baht, but she wanted 150,000. Still, my feelings for her haven’t changed.”
Family tensions soared when Nonglak, Wasan’s sister-in-law, explained that wanida had previously set the dowry at 100,000 baht and had threatened to terminate her pregnancy if it wasn’t met.
Fed up and furious, Boonmee is determined to seek justice, planning to press charges against Wanida for the damage done to her grandson’s home.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Suphot Phothisuwan of the Phra Charoen Police Station confirmed receiving the complaint and stated that mediation is scheduled for January 6, where both parties will attempt to settle the dispute and discuss compensation.
In related news, a 21 year old Thai woman from the northern province of Kamphaeng Phet accused her former father-in-law of failing to honour a promise to pay a 280,000 baht dowry, leaving her and her family in debt.
