Preschool teacher in Sisaket accused of husband’s murder
A tragic incident occurred in Kanthararom district, Sisaket province, where a 53 year old preschool teacher, Somjit, allegedly killed her husband, 58 year old Prasit, while he was asleep.
The incident took place on January 19 at their rural home in Ban Khlor. Prasit, also known as Changsit, was found with a neck wound. Somjit, who suffers from mental health issues, is suspected of the crime.
Yesterday morning, January 20, reporters visited the scene where Prasit’s daughter and relatives were collecting his clothes to prepare for his funeral at his parents’ house. The daughter, the third child of the deceased and the suspect, revealed that her parents lived and slept together in the rural area where the incident occurred.
Despite her mental health condition, her mother regularly took medication and worked at a preschool every day. The daughter was unaware if her mother had missed her medication recently, as her elder sister primarily cared for their mother.
The daughter learnt about the tragedy on the morning of January 19 when her sister called to inform her. She rushed to the house and was devastated by the news.
Her elder sister is currently taking care of their mother at the hospital. The legal proceedings are pending the completion of Prasit’s funeral.
Husband murder
The son-in-law of the deceased, who was the first to arrive at the scene around 7.40am, found the CCTV unplugged and Prasit not emerging from the house. Upon entering, he discovered Prasit face down, deceased with severe neck injuries.
Somjit was found behind the house and attempted to embrace her sister-in-law, the son-in-law’s partner, but he instructed her back inside. He noted that Somjit was incoherent and repeatedly mentioned Min Buri, a district in Bangkok, which confused him.
The son-in-law recalled meeting Somjit on January 17, noting her usual cheerful and harmless demeanour. The family had not noticed any alarming behaviour before the incident. Normally, the daughters would take their mother on outings to help relieve her stress.
A visit to Prasit’s parents’ house in Du subdistrict revealed a somber atmosphere as the family prepared for the funeral. Prasit’s father, 77 year old Sak, shared that Prasit was the eldest of four children.
Both Prasit and Somjit were known as good-natured people with only minor marital disagreements. Although aware of his daughter-in-law’s psychiatric condition, Sak never imagined it would lead to such a fatal outcome.
On the morning of January 19, Prasit’s mother shared a foreboding dream of their son crying at the scene of the incident, unaware that the dream would precede the tragic news of his death.
Police Colonel Thatchaphong Promma of Kanthararom Police Station reported that initial interrogations of Somjit were inconclusive due to her incoherent state. No signs of forced entry were found at the scene, but a blood-stained axe and knife were recovered.
It is believed that the murder weapon had been cleaned with a blanket, which was later placed on a haystack, possibly to be burned. Family speculation suggests Somjit’s failure to take medication for over two weeks could have triggered the incident while Prasit was asleep, reported KhaoSod.
The court has issued a warrant for Somjit’s arrest, and she remains under police custody at Kanthararom Hospital. Medical treatment is ongoing to stabilise her condition before she is to be remanded to the Sisaket Provincial Court.
