Thai bride-to-be forgets bag in temple bathroom, loses 100,000 baht dowry
A Thai bride-to-be lost 100,000 baht in gold and cash yesterday that she prepared as a dowry for her wedding after forgetting her bag in the bathroom of a temple in the Isaan province of Ubon Ratchathani.
The victim, Prapassorn, contacted officers at Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station at around 2.30pm, yesterday, January 19 to report the theft at Sa Prasan Sook Temple. Upon their arrival, Prapassorn, who was visibly distressed, led the police to the bathroom where she left her bag.
Prapassorn explained that she entered the unisex bathroom at the temple and placed her bag on the floor near the door while she used the toilet. After leaving the bathroom, she drove out of the temple to meet her mother.
About 20 minutes later, Prapassorn realised her mistake and rushed back to the temple. While her bag was still in the same location, the gold necklaces and cash worth about 100,000 baht had gone missing.
The bride-to-be told the police that she planned to get married the following day, January 20, and withdrew the cash and prepared the gold as part of her dowry. There has been no update on whether the wedding went ahead after the loss.
Channel 7 reported that the temple attracts many visitors daily due to the fame of the late monk, Luang Pu Boonme Chotipaolo, whose ashes are housed there. As a result, identifying the thief has proven difficult for the police.
Officers are reviewing security footage from around the temple but no updates have been provided regarding a suspect.
In a related story, a Thai man filed a complaint with Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station in December 2023, stating that he lost nearly 700,000 baht in gold and cash he had prepared as a dowry for his girlfriend. He claimed the thief broke his car’s window and stole all the valuables.
However, after further questioning, police became suspicious of the case, and the man eventually confessed that he fabricated the dowry theft. He explained that he had no money for the wedding and had invented the story to avoid telling his girlfriend about his financial problems, using the supposed theft as an excuse to cancel the wedding.
