Two more Thai hostages released from conflict in Gaza
Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara today celebrated the release of two more Thai hostages from the conflict in Gaza. Their release was facilitated by a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas.
Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara conveyed his joy at the Thai hostages’ release via the social media platform Twitter (X). The 66 year old Bangkok-born politician expressed his delight at being able to personally welcome the newly released Thai hostages to a hospital in Tel Aviv.
In his message, he highlighted the heartwarming sight of the previously released 17 Thai hostages who were eagerly waiting to welcome and provide moral support to the latest released individuals.
As per the latest figures, the total number of released Thai hostages has reached 19, whilst 13 still remain captive. Tragically, the October 7 attack by Hamas claimed the lives of 39 Thai nationals, reported Bangkok Post.
The crucial role played by a Thai Muslim group in ensuring the early release of the Thai hostages was acknowledged on Monday. The group had been in direct communication with Hamas. However, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson maintained that they consulted with multiple entities during this process.
Prior to the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas, approximately 30,000 Thai labourers were employed in Israel’s agricultural sector. This group of workers was one of the largest migrant worker contingents in the country.
According to government figures, nearly 9,000 Thai workers have already been repatriated back to Thailand. The newly released Thai citizens are also scheduled for repatriation this week, coinciding with Parnpree’s visit to Israel.
In related news, the Foreign Ministry of Thailand announced the release of three additional Thai nationals, Wichian Temthong, Surin Kesungnoen and Pornsawan Pinakalo, from Hamas’ captivity. This brings the total number of freed Thai hostages to 17. Upon their release, the trio were admitted to an Israeli hospital for medical check-ups. To read more click HERE
